Zion Grove Baptist Church is not just a building; it is a beacon of hope and resilience, with a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1880's by the dedicated Rev. John Pendleton. This church emerged during a pivotal time when many Black individuals in Caroline County began their courageous journey toward freedom, following the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865, and the conclusion of the Civil War. These monumental events allowed countless Black families to break free from the burdens of farms and plantations, igniting a spirit of liberation and community.

In its formative years, families from Camp A.P. Hill found solace and unity at Bethlehem Baptist Church, cultivating a vibrant community spirit. As the community's needs evolved, the vision for Zion Grove took shape. Thanks to Rev. Pendleton's unwavering commitment, the church was founded near State Route 2, where it acquired its first land in 1881. After years of dedication, the community joyously celebrated the completion of its enduring structure in 1917, marking a significant milestone in its shared journey of faith and perseverance.

Over the years, Zion Grove has been enriched by an extraordinary succession of pastors, including Rev. Clair, Rev. Osborne, Rev. Samuel, Rev. Barton, Rev. L.M. Stephens, Rev. S.H. Carter, Rev. Ronald Williams, Rev. Lewis Johnson, Sr. and Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grasty, each of whom played a vital role in shaping the church’s legacy. Today, the congregation is thrilled to be under the guidance of Rev. Lance Jeter, who took on the role of pastor on November 23, 2025. Rev. Jeter continues the proud tradition of faithful leadership that defines Zion Grove Baptist Church.

We invite everyone to experience the warmth and vibrancy of our community, where faith, love, and unity flourish in an uplifting atmosphere. Where, EVERYBODY IS SOMEBODY! Come and join us as we together write the next chapter of this inspiring story!
